HEALTH & SAFETY
Our focus on safety is for one main reason: we want every one of our workers to go home to their families at the end of the day. We have created extensive safety procedures to ensure each team member understands his or her role before they enter a job site. It’s more than a part of our operations; it’s integral to our values and culture.
Our safety processes fall into three categories:
Training and Communication
Continuous communication is our goal. This includes coaching between each trades person and his or her site supervisor, between each supervisor and the site manager, and between the site manager and the executive management team. We facilitate that communication process through ongoing evaluation and continuous and personalized training in:
• Leadership for safety excellence
• Leadership in hazard recognition and mitigation
We support this training with 360 degree coaching. This allows for regular review of every team member’s performance, offering frequent opportunities for positive feedback. Open-floor daily meetings are also held to ensure understanding of the work plan and review risk mitigation.
Planning and Risk Mitigation
Understanding and mitigating risks is a process that must be undertaken by the entire team, and requires extensive planning. Our employees conduct a work face Field Level Risk Assessment and participate in HSE Observations, a hybrid version of a behavioral based program. This planning begins at the bidding stage, long before anyone arrives on a job site, with a team of professionals who build an in-depth understanding of the project’s scope, potential risk and the health, and safety requirements.
Once a project is underway, our Environmental Health and Safety staff are involved in the daily work-planning activities to ensure that the plan, do, check and act process is continuously followed.
Monitoring and Accountability
Understanding and mitigating risks is a process that must be undertaken by the entire team, and requires extensive planning. Our employees conduct a work face Field Level Risk Assessment and participate in HSE Observations, a hybrid version of a behavioral based program. This planning begins at the bidding stage, long before anyone arrives on a job site, with a team of professionals who build an in-depth understanding of the project’s scope, potential risk and the health, and safety requirements.
Reports are generated each month identifying both leading and lagging indicators. These reports are compared each month to provide an overall picture of HSE performance and provide insight where to focus. Results are then communicated across the company for review, discussion, and action.
An important part of the accountability process at Sunny Corner is the recognition of employees who display leadership and high performance in their jobs, particularly in the area of safety. This reinforces the culture of safety and productivity that the company was built on.
